About
Verinag Spring

Verinag, located at the foot of the Banihal Pass, is famous for its octagonal stone basin built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir. It is officially recognized as the main source of the Jhelum River.

Octagonal Basin

Constructed in 1620 AD, the deep blue spring is enclosed by an impressive stone embankment with arched recesses. The symmetry and engineering are typical of high Mughal art.

Mughal Garden

The garden surrounding the spring features massive Chinar trees and manicured lawns. Emperor Shah Jahan later added the long water canal leading out from the spring.

Source of Jhelum

The water from the spring is ice-cold and remains crystal clear throughout the year. It eventually forms the Veth (Jhelum) river that flows through the heart of the valley.
